Pearls are nature’s timeless treasures, formed over years beneath the sea. Their luminous glow and delicate beauty require gentle care to preserve their radiance for generations. Unlike other gemstones, pearls are organic and need moisture and natural oils to maintain their lustre.
Daily Care for Your Pearls
- Wear them often! Pearls thrive when worn regularly, as the natural oils from your skin keep them hydrated and luminous.
- Apply cosmetics and perfumes first. Always put on your makeup, perfume, and hairspray before wearing pearls to avoid exposure to harmful chemicals.
- Wipe after wearing. Gently clean pearls with a soft, damp cloth to remove sweat, oils, and residue.
Cleaning & Maintenance
- Avoid harsh chemicals. Pearls are sensitive to chlorine, bleach, ammonia, vinegar, and even perspiration, which can erode their surface.
- Do not submerge in water. Never wear pearls in the shower, pool, or while washing dishes. Water can weaken the silk threads used to string pearl necklaces, causing them to stretch or break.
- Re-string pearls periodically. If worn frequently, pearls should be re-strung every one to two years with knots between each pearl to prevent them from rubbing against each other.
Storage & Protection
- Keep pearls separate. Store them in a soft pouch or a fabric-lined jewellery box to prevent scratches from other jewellery.
- Avoid airtight storage. Pearls need moisture, so do not keep them in plastic bags or dry environments, as they can become brittle. If storing them in a dry place, keep a small damp cloth nearby (but not in direct contact with the pearls).
- Do not hang pearl necklaces. Hanging can cause unnecessary strain on the silk thread, stretching it out over time.
